Flame Arrestors

Flame arrestors are safety device which is used to inhibit the flame propagating through equipment. The equipment which involves flammable vapours and gases or reactive gases is in potential danger to get burnt or exploded in case the vapours catch fire. The flame arrestor doesn’t let this happen; it prevents this situation from happening.
Some of the processes which involve flammable vapours or gases include Reacting, Mixing, Blending, Drilling and Separation. Some of the industries which use the processes and combustible vapours and gases are Chemical, Petrochemical, Refining, Oil Exploration, Sewage Treatment, Power Generation etc.
It is relatively simple equipment which contains no moving part, does not require a power supply and does not require an operator to observe it; it just requires maintenance over certain time periods. Some common objects which have flame arrestors are fuel gas pipelines and storage tank vents, the exhaust system of internal combustion engine, davy lamps in coal mining, gasoline containers, safety storage cabinets for volatile liquids having flammable vapours. The sizing of the flame arrestor depends on the area of application.

Flame Arrestors

Flame arrestors are passive devices that prevent flame transmission from travelling along a pipe. They consist of narrow passages. During normal operating conditions, a flame arrester allows the flow of gas or steam. It prevents flames from passing due to their small size.
Several features are inherent in the valve design to ensure smooth, positive, and effective operation. The body is self-draining, and drip rings prevent condensation from settling on seating surfaces. A diaphragm and seal manufactured from Teflon reduce the possibility of ice formation and sticky residues hindering the valve from opening while the pallet assembly moves freely on guide posts.
Flame Arrestors are device which allows gas to pass through it but stops a flame in order to prevent a larger fire or explosion. There is an enormous variety of situations in which flame arrestors are applied. Flame arrestors of numerous varieties have been applied in many industries. All of them operate on the same principle: removing heat from the flame as it attempts to travel through narrow passages with walls of metal or other heat-conductive material.
Flame arrestors are used in different industries, including refining, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, oil exploration and production, sewage treatment, landfills, mining, power generation and bulk liquids transportation. In some cases, the flames involve exothermic (heat-producing) reactions other than oxidation. Processes which generate the combustible or reactive gases include blending, reacting, separation, mixing, drilling and digesting. These processes involve numerous equipment configurations and gas mixtures.

Testing & How Flame Arrestors Work
Most Flame Arrestors applications are in systems that collect gases emitted by liquids and solids. These systems, commonly used in many industries, may be called vapor control systems (VCS). The gases typically vented to the atmosphere or controlled via vapor control systems are flammable. If the right conditions are such that ignition occurs, a flame inside or outside of the system could result, with the potential to do catastrophic damage.

Under normal operating conditions, Flame Arrestors works by permitting a relatively free flow of gas or vapor (2) through the piping (5) system. If the mixture ignites and the flame (1) begins to travel back through the piping, the arrester will prohibit the flame (3) from moving back to the gas source (2).

All Flame Arrestors have the same principle: removing heat from the flame as it attempts to travel through narrow passages with metal walls or other heat-conductive material (4). Flame arrestors are passive devices with no moving parts. They prevent flame propagation from the exposed side of the unit to the protected side by using wound crimped (corrugated) metal flame cell "element or matrix." For instance, flame arresters made by most manufacturers employ layers of metal ribbons with crimped corrugations(4).

The flame arrestors's carefully constructed matrix of uniform openings quenches the flame by absorbing the flame's heat. This process provides an extinguishing barrier to the ignited vapor mixture. It is how a flame arrester work to prevent catastrophes from occurring due to the ignition of air/gas vapor mixtures propagating through piping systems.

Product function

Uses of flame arrestors
► To prevent the gas or vapours from igniting.
► In case the gas or vapour ignites then to stop the propagation of flame.
► If it has propagated to some extent then confining the fire within a controlled region.
► If an explosion has occured then limiting the spread of the explosion.
► Stopping the spread of an open fire.
